4 Results of “Bad Bugs”

When your body has the wrong strains of gut bacteria, it can cause health issues. You may be surprised to hear that having too many of the wrong “bugs” can cause:

  • Gum disease
  • Heart and artery problems
  • Obesity
  • Celiac disease

Biologists have identified the bacteria strain Bacteriodetes as suspect for causing both gum disease and heart disease. This strain, along with Firmicutes, breaks down our food and converts  it into energy, and it is one of the most common forms of bacteria found in the human gut.

Though the research has been limited because they’ve only performed these tests on mice, biologists have noticed the amount of Bacteriodetes varies between the healthy and the sick, the lean and the obese. The sick and obese tend to have more of it in their gut. Also, those who have celiac disease or who are sensitive to gluten have higher amounts of Bacteriodetes (and other bacterial strains too – Clostridium and Staphylococcus to be specific).

So, if you’re looking to prevent gum and heart disease, you’ll need to start with the bacteria in your gut. You’ll want to inoculate yourself with plenty of “good bugs” to combat the overgrowth of the bad. This means getting a wide variety of plant and fermented foods in your diet. It’s as simple as that!
