Super Food Friday- Coconut Oil

There’s been a lot of hype around coconut oil now for several years. Is it actually healthy? Most of the research published about coconut oil has come up with positive results. However, recently the American Heart Association published a negative report about coconut oil. If you want to read more about that specific study, see Dr. Josh Axe’s blog post about it here:

Take that study how you will, but we believe coconut oil IS good for you and there are over 15,000 studies to back that up. {It is especially beneficial when it is in the extra virgin- minimally processed- state.} The simple truth is, inflammation causes most diseases and coconut oil helps reduce inflammation. Here’s how:

So, what can you do with coconut oil? Well that’s a loaded question, and there are literally thousands of ways you can use it. There are food recipes, household recipes, skin, hair and beauty recipes, cleaning recipes, etc:

“Butter” your toast
Add it to any smoothie
Use it as cuticle oil
Prevent diaper rash
Use it as a face wash- look up a recipe or just use the oil by itself! It also removes eye makeup superbly
Use as a massage oil
Massage into scalp before you wash your hair for a super deep conditioning treatment
Sunburn relief
Use on popcorn instead of butter or nasty oils
Toothpaste- mix equal parts coconut oil and baking soda, then add a few drops of peppermint oil
Natural deodorant- mix 1/4 c. each baking soda and arrowroot powder, then mash in 6-8 Tbsp. coconut oil and add several drops of your favorite essential oils.
Treat burns and wounds
Use as a shaving cream
Treat athlete’s foot and fungus
Treat cold sores
Hair detangler
Apply to jammed zippers
Remove gum from hair
Shine your shoes
Boost your immune system- 1 Tbsp. daily
Treat yeast infections- take 1 Tbsp. daily and apply to affected areas
Use on pets! Give them a teaspoon or two to help with digestion and use on their skin irritations
Relieve constipation- 1 Tbsp. per day
Rub on dry, cracked heels, cover with socks overnight
Use as leather or furniture polish

Here is an awesome, easy recipe:

Coconut Fudge

1/2 c. extra virgin coconut oil, liquefied by placing in warm water
1/2 c. cocoa powder
1/4 c. raw honey
vanilla, to taste

Mix ingredients together and pour into glass pan.  Add any desired extras, like coconut, nuts, sprinkle some sea salt on top, or add 1/2 c. natural peanut butter (mix in before). Refrigerate until solid, then cut and serve. Store in airtight container in fridge.
