3 Things You Can Do To Reduce Anxiety & Depression

Most of us know that the gut is super important in many aspects of our health. The cause of depression and anxiety usually lies in the gut, so they are no different. Here are 3 things you can do to optimize the function of your gut and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression:

1. Tonify Vagus Nerve

The vagus nerve affects many parts of our body, such as: heart, lungs, gut, liver, gallbladder, female fertility organs, kidneys and bladder.

Because the vagus nerve has so much impact on our body systems, there is great benefit in exercising and toning it, much like we do muscles. Here’s how:

    1. Gargle H20–do this as long as you can, until your eyes water 🙂
    2. Gag yourself {not our favorite!}
    3. Sing or hum at the top of your lungs

2. Nurture Your Relationships

Human beings are wired to connect with others. When we have loving, healthy relationships it improves production of serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin- which in turn helps us have more positive self talk, which assists us in cultivating our most important relationship- with ourselves. It’s hard when you don’t feel like it, but get out and connect to others!

3. Eat a Variety of Foods

Did you know that the average American only eats 10 different foods per day, year round?! Not only is that pretty boring, but it also doesn’t provide enough food for the vital organisms in your gut to function properly. A variety of foods helps to bring balance to your gut, PLUS it makes you feel good, right? Also, think about how a beautiful, colorful plate of real food makes you feel. Try something new this week!

*Bonus* If you take a probiotic, make sure it includes a prebiotic (this is the food that the probiotic needs to proliferate)
